What is irritable bowel syndrome?

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a chronic condition that affects the large intestine (colon) causing cramping, abdominal pain, bloating, gas, diarrhea and constipation. The exact cause of IBS is not known. IBS can be very stressful and can be difficult to manage. But it is important to remember that:

  • It is not an anatomical or a structural problem
  • It is not an identifiable physical or chemical disorder
  • It is not a cancer and will not cause cancer
  • It will not cause other gastrointestinal disease

Risk factors:

  • Young people (<45 years)
  • Females
  • Family history of IBS
  • History of anxiety/depression

Signs and symptoms:

The signs and symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome can vary widely from person to person. Among the most common are abdominal pain/cramping, bloated feeling, gas, diarrhea or constipation (sometimes alternating bouts), mucus in the stool.

How to Manage:

Follow these 7 simple ways to manage IBS effectively

Be careful with fiber: If you have constipation, adding fiber can help. Increase the amount of fiber in your diet  slowly over a period of weeks. Fiber rich foods include whole grains, fruits and vegetables. If you have diarrhea, avoid too much of fiber

Avoid problem foods. If certain foods make your signs and symptoms worse, don’t eat them. If gas is a problem for you avoid beans, cabbage, milk, cauliflower and broccoli

Eat at regular times. Don’t skip meals, and try to eat about the same time each day to help regulate bowel function

Take care with dairy products. If you’re lactose intolerant, try substituting curd for milk. Consuming small amounts of milk products or combining them with other foods also may help

Drink plenty of liquids. Try to drink plenty of fluids every day. Drink 8-10 glasses of water daily

Exercise regularly. Exercise helps relieve depression and stress, stimulates normal contractions of your intestines and can help you feel better about yourself

Consult a doctor: If your symptoms tend to worsen and do not improve over time, consult a doctor
