There is some good news for Indian Type 2 diabetes patients!  Pharmaceutical companies (Like US drug maker Eli Lilly) have recently launched latest generation once-a-week anti-diabetes drugs in India.

So, What Exactly Are These Medicines?

These medicines are once-a-week diabetes medications (like Dulaglutide) which are available in injectable form.The medicines belong to a group of anti-diabetes medications called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist. It is a type of hormone that helps to regulate the blood sugar levels.The medicines aims to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes.

Are There Any Additional Benefits?

It is cited that in addition to offering benefit of  once- a-week administration, these medicines are associated with a reduced risk of fluctuating blood sugar levels and promoting weight loss.They are also associated with regulating cholesterol levels, promoting heart health as well as maintaining  blood pressure.

How Effective Are These Medicines?

The efficacy of Dulaglutide has been proven and the drug is already up for sale in the United States and Europe. The drug has undergone multiple clinical trials and in all those trials, it has shown very good efficacy and safety profile.

The medicines are currently priced around ₹2000-4000 for a week, and will be available in the form of a single-dose pen that does not require mixing or measuring and can injected easily  at any time of the day independent of the meal timings.

India is the third Asian country to where these medicines are being launched after UAE and Japan. The medicine Dulaglutide got a green light from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in September 2014 and European approval in November 2014.

Dulaglutide  is a prescription drug and like any other prescription drug it should be taken only after consulting the doctor.
