7 Unhealthy Habits That Can Harm Men’s Fertility

Smoking also affects men's fertility

If you are spending an easy go lucky life with little concern for your health and are already in your mid-thirties, your chances of being able to father a child may also be on the decline. Yes, it’s true that age is also one of the determining factors for a man. Researchers are of the opinion that as man nears 40, his reproductive abilities begin to show a downward trend. There are some very ordinary habits that affect a man’s sperm count. Here’s some tips for the dads- to-be that can be very useful in the long run

1 . Alcohol

Alcohol affects not only female fertility but men’s fertility too. Consuming alcohol beyond prescribed limits may cause multiple reproductive issues including reduced libido and lower testosterone levels and poor sperm quality and quantity. Alcohol is also a major cause of liver malfunction which in turn affects your fertility.

2 . Smoking

Say no to cigarettes and marijuana! Men who smoke have a considerably lower sperm count than men who don’t smoke. Smoking causes erectile dysfunction. If you are a chain smoker, your partner is sure to experience difficulties while conceiving.

3 . Sedentary Lifestyle

Exercise is a must for a healthy lifestyle. You need to follow a regular work out regime in order to stay fit and active. Exercising at least 5 days a week for 30 minutes daily is effective in increasing your stamina, immunity, healing powers and overall fertility.

4 . Stress

If you are planning a baby, be sure to stay away from any kind of stress. Stress is the major cause of hormonal imbalance and the negative effects of stress are very difficult to overcome. Maintain a balance in work and life and be sure to spend quality time with your partner. Severe stress could interfere badly with your testosterone levels too.

5 . Junk Food

It is better to give up the habit of eating fast food too often if you want to retain healthy fertility levels. A recent study showed that men who were ate processed meat had very low count of “normal” shaped sperm cells compared to those who ate less. Avoid junk food at any cost!

6 . Self Medication

Never take any medication without consulting a doctor. There are certain medications that can affect your fertility. If you are using medications, talk to your doctor on the side effects as well. Some people resort to taking steroids to increase muscle mass and for body building. This is extremely unhealthy.  Anabolic steroids which are known to stimulate muscle strength and growth can have tremendous negative effects like causing the testicles to shrink and sperm production to decrease.

7 . Obesity

Male obesity impacts negatively on male reproductive potential. Fertility problems can happen in both overweight and underweight males. Weight issues not only lower your sperm count but also alters the physical and molecular structure of germ cells in the testes and ultimately mature sperm.
