Allergies are simply your immune system being hypersensitive to a certain substance. They are not only seasonal or specific to foodstuffs but can occur due to multiple reasons in our urban lives. 1 . Honey

Honey has a soothing quality. It coats and soothes the irritated portion of your throat. It helps clear congestion too. Honey also has anti-bacterial properties. The ideal dosage would be 1 tablespoon, 2-3 times a day. You can also try honey with warm water and add some lemon juice.

2 . Red Onion

Use red onions to make a home-made cough syrup. Onions contain a substance called quercetin which acts as an antihistamine. Histamine acts as the body’s natural allergic response to substances, and an antihistamine works by preventing the release of histamine from certain cells thereby blocking the allergic reaction.  Slice an onion and add water, let it sit for 10-12 hours before you drink it 1-2 times a day. Since Onions are pungent, you can soak sliced onions with organic honey and consume the liquid that forms after the mixture has been sitting for a couple of hours.

3 . Ginger

Ginger can help you produce mucous and relieve coughing by clearing your sore throat. You can use fresh ginger to make a tea. Ginger juice can be had with honey as well. If not fresh ginger juice, mix ginger powder with a tablespoon of honey and have it 2-3 times a day depending on the severity of your cough. Chewing fresh ginger works just as well, if not better, as long as you are used to the pungent taste.

4 . Pineapple

Bromelain is an enzyme found in Pineapples. Its anti-inflammatory properties help thin the mucus in your throat thus suppressing a cough and allergy based sinus issues. Drink pineapple extract or eat the fiber-rich core of a juicy pineapple, it is the best natural source of Bromelain and will reduce any throat inflammation caused due to allergies.

5 . Mint Leaves

Another great remedy is to have some mint or pudina.Mint has anti- inflammatory properties and can be consumed as a tea. Add 1/2 teaspoon of dried mint leaves to a cup of boiling hot water. Let the mixture steep and have it at room temperature or when mildly warm. Follow the same method if using fresh mint leaves. You can add some honey to the freshly prepared tea after it has cooled down a bit.

6 . Kantakari

Kantakari is an Ayurvedic herb widely used for allergic cough, among other respiratory tract conditions. The kantakari plant is a thorny, branched herb with egg shaped leaves, purple flowers and a green and yellow fruit.Boil 4-5 gm of the plant in about 200 ml water, until it reduces to more than half its volume, sieve and consume.

7 . Black Pepper

As a home remedy for allergic cough, take a couple of black pepper corns and keep this mixture in the mouth until you feel the relief. Black pepper stimulates circulation and mucus flow. It can be used to make a tea by adding honey and boiling water. A simple concoction of pepper powder and a spoon full of honey does the trick too. Have the spoonful of pepper and honey thrice a day and see the difference.
